#DignityNotCharity

The crisis of the pandemic is not uniform. At its margins are countless individuals, families, and communities, who are battling unprecedented unemployment, displacement, deprivation, illness, trauma, violence, and hunger.

Children, frequently forgotten in the face of large-scale crisis, often live at such margins. Children across the board – those living with families, street and homeless children, children in institutional care, children of persons with disability, and child victims – need and deserve focused attention.

HAQ: Centre for Child Rights, with 20+ years of experience in the protection, promotion, and recognition of child rights, confronts the impact of COVID-19 upon children and their kin in partnership with local NGOs, administrations, and vendors across India.

HAQ’s initiative #DignityNotCharity is one step towards a dignified response towards the children and families affected by COVID-19.

Shyam (name changed) is a daily-wage worker whose job is to clean parts of machines. He is the only bread earner living with his two children and wife near Turkman Gate, Delhi. One month’s ration and essentials were like a blessing in disguise.
Rakesh (name changed) lives in a slum near Badarpur Highway, Delhi. He earns his living by mending shoes. He was desperately looking for any assistance that could keep him and his family alive.
Rashmi (name changed) is currently paralyzed. She is a resident of Geeta Colony, Delhi. Her husband who is a daily wage labourer cannot sustain a living anymore. Every support was like a drop in the ocean.
Rashid (name changed) is a resident of Seelampur, Delhi. He is a daily wage worker who used to earn his living by doing marble polishing. The lockdown worsened his financial situation, with no likelihood of any money coming by.
Faiza (name changed) is a resident of Loni, Uttar Pradesh. She is dependent on her husband who works in a glass factory. In the lockdown period, the owner of the factory refused to give him any money in advance, creating a financial turmoil in their lives.
Fardeen (name changed) is a polio-affected person living in Qasim Jan, Delhi, who earned a meager amount assisting in a shop, which was shut down. No work from home for Fardeen and many others like him is possible.
